First Impressions
Some hotels impress children immediately with swimming pools and entertainment. Others become memorable because they feel unlike anywhere else they have stayed. Hotel de la Ville belongs to the second group. Positioned opposite Monza’s Royal Palace, the hotel feels more like an elegant private residence than a conventional international property. Antiques, framed artwork, traditional furniture and polished wood fill the interiors, while the Nardi family’s long ownership gives the hotel a strong sense of identity. Travelling with my wife and our two children, we found the idea of staying outside central Milan increasingly appealing. Monza provides more space, a slower rhythm and easier access to gardens, while Milan remains close enough for a day trip.
Location and Arrival
Hotel de la Ville has been operated by the Nardi family for four generations. That history is visible throughout the property. The rooms and public spaces do not follow a standard brand template, and the hotel does not feel as though its interior could be recreated in another city. The entrance has the atmosphere of a traditional Italian residence, filled with objects that appear to have been collected over time rather than selected as part of a recent design project. Our children were drawn to the more unusual details, while my wife and I appreciated staying somewhere with a genuine sense of place. There is a formality to the interiors, but the family ownership prevents the hotel from feeling anonymous.
The Room
Accommodation is spread across the main hotel and the neighbouring La Villa annex. The room categories range from compact single rooms to executive rooms, junior suites, full suites and two-bedroom family accommodation. The two-bedroom options make Hotel de la Ville one of the most practical family choices in this collection. When travelling with two children, the difference between one room and two proper bedrooms is enormous. The parents have privacy, the children have their own space and everyone can follow a slightly different evening routine. It also allows the accommodation to feel like a temporary home rather than one hotel room containing four people and all their belongings. Each room is individually decorated with traditional fabrics, period-style furniture and modern conveniences. Some guests may prefer a cleaner and more contemporary style, but removing the traditional interiors would also remove much of the hotel’s personality. The Deluxe Rooms and suites express the hotel’s character most strongly. Families should confirm whether their room is located in the main building or La Villa and ask about the exact layout before arrival.
Design and Style
The property is closer to an elegant private residence than a hotel: antiques, oak, framed artwork and period furnishings throughout, individually decorated room by room. It feels established and confident rather than designed to follow current hotel trends.
Pools and Facilities
Hotel de la Ville is not a resort. There is no large outdoor pool, children’s club or packed schedule of family activities. Guests have access to a gym and sauna, while bicycles and private parking are also available. The experience is built around the hotel’s atmosphere, its location and the surrounding area. Private parking will be particularly useful for families exploring Lombardy by car. It allows guests to visit towns, lakes or attractions outside Monza without relying entirely on public transport. The nearby gardens compensate to some extent for the lack of extensive outdoor hotel facilities. This is a property for families who plan to explore rather than spend the entire day inside the hotel.
Spa and Wellness
Wellness is limited to a gym and sauna. It is enough for a city-break stay, but not a reason to book.
Food and Drink
Derby Grill is the hotel’s award-winning restaurant. The dining room has oak panelling, antiques and an extensive wine selection, creating the atmosphere of a long-established private club. For my wife and me, this is part of the appeal. It feels distinctly Italian and provides an opportunity to enjoy more refined regional cooking. For young children, the atmosphere may feel formal. Families will need to judge whether their children are comfortable sitting through a longer evening meal. Older children who enjoy Italian food may find the experience surprisingly engaging, particularly if the family treats dinner as part of the occasion rather than something to complete quickly. The adjoining bar provides a more relaxed alternative for light dishes, cocktails and evening drinks. There are also restaurants elsewhere in Monza, giving families the option of choosing simple pizza or pasta when a formal dinner feels too ambitious.
Service
Independent family-owned hotels can offer a different kind of service from large luxury brands. Rather than focusing on elaborate processes, the best of them create a sense that guests are being welcomed into a place with its own history. Hotel de la Ville’s character is closely tied to the Nardi family and the individuality of the property. It feels established and confident rather than designed to follow current hotel trends. That personality will not appeal to everyone, but families looking for something distinctive are likely to remember it long after a more conventional stay.
The Neighbourhood
The hotel sits opposite the Royal Palace and close to the gardens of the Reggia di Monza. This position works particularly well with children. Historic buildings and cultural attractions may keep adults interested, but nearby gardens allow the family to balance sightseeing with time outdoors. The children could walk, explore and use some energy without the day requiring another ticket or organised activity. Milan Central Station is approximately 16 kilometres away, allowing guests to visit the city while returning to quieter Monza in the evening. For our family, that separation would be a significant advantage. Milan offers museums, shopping, architecture and restaurants, but staying in the centre can feel intense. Monza allows families to experience the city without remaining inside it for the entire trip. The hotel is also conveniently positioned for the Monza motor-racing circuit. Families visiting for an event or travelling with children interested in motorsport will find the location particularly useful.
Family Experience
The two-bedroom accommodation is the clearest reason for families to consider the hotel. However, this is not a child-focused property. Families need to provide most of the entertainment themselves through trips to the gardens, Milan, the racing circuit and the surrounding region. The restaurant can feel formal, and some children may find the traditional décor less immediately exciting than a modern resort. It will work best for families who enjoy exploring and appreciate historic surroundings.

Hotel de la Ville brings together two qualities that do not always appear in the same hotel: genuine character and practical family accommodation. The two-bedroom options make life easier, while the location opposite the Royal Palace provides a sense of occasion every time guests leave the building. It is not the place for a pool-based family holiday, but it is a wonderful base for discovering Monza, Milan and Lombardy at a more relaxed pace.
