A wellbeing retreat that feels genuinely different — the entire island is built around how you feel, not just how it photographs.

What we loved
  • Wellbeing is a genuine identity, not an add-on spa menu
  • Naturally green island with real privacy between villas
  • Personal Jadugar (butler) service that is attentive without intruding
  • Areka Wellbeing Zone is far beyond a typical resort spa
What could be better
  • Restaurant service is occasionally less polished than the rest of the operation
  • Very quiet atmosphere — no real nightlife scene
  • Premium pricing, particularly once programmes are added

First Impressions

Many luxury resorts in the Maldives offer spas, yoga classes and healthy menus, but JOALI BEING has built its entire identity around wellbeing. Set on a lush private island in Raa Atoll, the resort feels peaceful from the moment it comes into view, with dense tropical vegetation surrounded by powder-soft sand and beautifully clear lagoon water. The atmosphere is calm and restorative rather than overly formal. Everything, from the architecture to the dining and daily activities, has been designed to encourage guests to slow down and focus on how they feel.

Location and Arrival

JOALI BEING is reached by an approximately 40-minute seaplane journey from Malé. The transfer immediately creates a sense of escape, replacing the noise of the capital with uninterrupted views across the Indian Ocean. Guests are welcomed at Velana International Airport and escorted to a private lounge before boarding the seaplane. It is a smooth and reassuring start, particularly after a long international journey. On arrival at the resort, each villa is assigned a personal “Jadugar”, JOALI’s name for its butler service. The Jadugar becomes the main point of contact throughout the stay, arranging restaurant bookings, wellness sessions, excursions and everyday requests.

The Room

JOALI BEING has 68 beach and overwater villas, ranging from spacious one-bedroom options to larger residences designed for families and groups. The Grand Ocean Villas are among the standout choices. They offer generous outdoor terraces, private swimming pools, direct lagoon access and separate living spaces. The interiors use natural materials, pale colours and high ceilings to create an open, calming environment. Bathrooms are large and beautifully designed, with open-plan layouts that allow natural light to fill the space. Although the villas are undeniably luxurious, they have also been designed to feel comfortable and liveable — there is enough space to spend a quiet day inside without feeling as though the island is being missed.

Design and Style

The overall style is modern but soft, avoiding the clinical appearance that can sometimes be associated with dedicated wellness retreats. Unlike some Maldivian islands that have been heavily landscaped, Bodufushi still feels naturally green, and villas and wellbeing facilities are carefully positioned among the trees, helping the resort maintain a strong sense of privacy.

Pools and Facilities

The island is easy to explore by bicycle, while the wide beaches and calm lagoon create plenty of opportunities for swimming, snorkelling or simply spending an afternoon beside the water. Away from the wellness programme, the resort offers tennis and padel courts, water activities, an art studio and bicycles for exploring the island. Despite the extensive facilities, the resort never feels busy. The atmosphere remains quiet and spacious, making it easy to participate in a full programme or simply spend the day by the villa pool.

Spa and Wellness

The Areka Wellbeing Zone is the heart of JOALI BEING. It is far more substantial than a typical resort spa and includes treatment rooms, hydrotherapy experiences, movement spaces and facilities for personalised wellbeing programmes. Guests can build an itinerary around fitness, sleep, nutrition, mindfulness or general relaxation. There is also a large gym, a dedicated yoga pavilion and several spaces intended for meditation and quiet reflection.

Food and Drink

The resort’s approach to food is based around nourishment rather than restriction. Guests are not expected to survive on juices and salads unless that is genuinely what they want. FLOW acts as the main dining destination, bringing several culinary concepts together under one roof. The menus cover a broad range of flavours while maintaining the resort’s focus on fresh ingredients and balanced cooking. Mojo offers a more relaxed atmosphere beside the pool, with Mediterranean-style dishes that work particularly well for a leisurely lunch. Meals are thoughtfully presented, but the dining experience remains accessible rather than overly complicated.

Service

The Jadugar service feels highly personalised without being intrusive. Having one person who understands the itinerary and preferences makes the entire stay feel more seamless. Butler, spa and housekeeping service are among the strongest aspects of the resort. Restaurant service can occasionally feel slightly less polished, particularly when compared with the exceptionally high standards elsewhere, but this is unlikely to overshadow the wider experience.

The Neighbourhood

Raa Atoll is quieter and less developed than the central atolls, and the resort occupies its own private island. There is no neighbourhood in the conventional sense — the surrounding lagoon, reef and ocean are the setting, and excursions are arranged through the resort.

Family Experience

Larger residences are designed for families and groups, and the island’s space and safety make it workable with children. That said, the resort is programme-led and deliberately quiet, so it suits families who want calm rather than a full entertainment schedule.

Value for Money

The experience comes at a premium, but for travellers looking to rest, reset and return home feeling noticeably different, it offers far more than a beautiful beach and an impressive villa.

Final Verdict

JOALI BEING successfully combines the privacy and beauty of a Maldivian island with a serious, carefully developed approach to wellbeing. Guests who prefer a lively nightlife scene or a large selection of casual restaurants may find the atmosphere too quiet — everyone else is likely to leave feeling genuinely restored.
